The IRS has been busy enhancing its services with a range of new features designed to make interacting with the agency smoother. Here’s a quick rundown of what you can expect:

  1. Enhanced Online Accounts for Individuals: The IRS is beefing up its Individual Online Account with six new features, including:

    1. Centralized Tax Information: Retrieve all your tax-related documents, like Wage & Income and Return transcripts, from one place.

    2. IP PIN Updates: Request updates to your Identity Protection PIN via your smartphone or tablet.

    3. Audit Status: Check the status of your audit online—no more waiting on hold!

    4. Lien Payoff Calculator: Calculate and generate lien payoff amounts easily.

    5. Pending Installment Agreements: Complete this process directly in your Online Account without being redirected.

    6. Tax Refund Overview: View a comprehensive summary of your account, including the status of your refund.

  2. Spanish-Speaking Services: The Business Tax Account is now available in Spanish. This update simplifies the process for Spanish-speaking business owners, allowing them to view their balance due and make payments in one place. Plus, sole proprietors can download business entity transcripts from their Business Tax Account.

  3. Electronic Amended Returns: You can now electronically file amended business Forms 940, 941, 943, and 945, including their Spanish versions. This digital upgrade helps IRS employees access return information more efficiently and minimizes errors.

  4. Document Upload Tool Milestone: The IRS has hit a major milestone with its Document Upload Tool, having processed over 1 million submissions. This tool lets you securely upload documents in response to IRS notices, making the process faster and more convenient.

  5. Mobile-Friendly Forms: Thirty IRS forms are now available in a mobile-adaptive format. You can fill them out on your smartphone or tablet, reducing the need for paper submissions and making the process more accessible.

  6. Redesigned Notices: The IRS has redesigned 100 of its most common notices to make them clearer and easier to understand, aiming to improve communication with taxpayers.

Assistance Provided in Person in Underprivileged Regions

In addition to digital upgrades, the IRS is expanding its in-person assistance, especially in rural and underserved areas. The agency is hosting Community Assistance Visits across the country, offering face-to-face help where it’s needed most. Upcoming visits include:

  • Aug. 5-9: Thomasville, Alabama

  • Aug. 19-23: Great Bend, Kansas

  • Sept. 9-13: West Plains, Missouri

  • Sept. 23-27: Clarkston, Washington

  • Oct. 7-11: Fairbanks, Alaska

What’s Next?

The IRS is not stopping here. Future plans include:

  • Enhancing call center efficiency and increasing staff at Taxpayer Assistance Centers.

  • Expanding online services with features like digital copies of notices and secure two-way messaging.

  • Accelerating digitalization efforts to process more paper forms electronically.

In summary, while reaching a live person at the IRS might still be a challenge from time to time, the agency’s efforts to modernize its systems and services are making significant strides.
